“Charity begins at home”- a very well-known proverb which is 100% true. When we want to teach something good, we should start at our home first and then naturally we will carry that habit to everywhere. It is equally applicable for habits related to eating and dinning. Today I will be sharing some table manners which is very important when you are visiting any where for dinning. Well, some of the cultures differs with the country and the religion. But some manners are universal and that are considered good manners everywhere all around the world.
Table manners for your children to learn
This article is particularly for the smaller kids or yoru children, who needs care and practise to learn table manners. I have shared some easy tips in this article which will help the parents to start the practise from the beginning and let your child grow the habit from home.
- Wash hands and face before sitting for eating
It is a very basic and also a healthy habit towash yoru hand s and face before sitting for the dine. Always make sure that you and yoru children follow these even if you are using spoon or fork for eating. Get fresh and seat for the dine freshly and cleaned.
- Sit properly in a single place
Often, children may not have the habit of sitting at a particular place and roam around. Well, that is not at a good habit. At home make sure, they must make the habit of sitting at a place. Roaming around is not at all expected. If you are visiting any restaurant, then it must disturb others. In case you are at invitation at anyone’s house, that can create mess all around. So, teach them how to sit at the table and wait for the food to be served.
- Take less food
Getting so many options while on invitation or at restaurant can make them feel excited and order for more. Well, don’t allow them to do so. Help them to choose their favourite dish. Ask them what they like to eat and then give the order. This would help them to know how to order foods. When at any invitation, show them the options and ask them what they want to take. If they love to take all of them, then offer them in small amount.
- Teach them to use napkin, hold spoon and fork properly.
Napkin usage is compulsory as it would prevent them from making their dress dirty. Teach them slowly how to hold a spoon and how to eat with spoon and fork. Practice at home. Or if they are comfortable at eating with hands (in country like India). If using hands, they should not mess up in any way. This would not be done in one day. You have to start practicing this at home.
- Practise chewing foods with mouth closed
This is again a skill which you need to make habituated at home. Chew the food without making sounds and mouth closed. Teach them the techniques and practise at home. Also don’t talk while having food in your mouth.
- Respect the foods
Make yoru children understand that food is a blessing and we should respect the foods. Wastage of food should not be allowed. Also playing of food on plate is also not encouraged. Ask for little at first and then if you need ask for second time. Eat with everyone and appreciate the food that you are eating.
- Wash you hand after finishing the food
This is a habit which is widely followed in country like India while washing hands and mouth after consuming foods is must. Washing mouth ensures that you don’t habit food particles which must be washed properly. Otherwise, that would cause dental problems or bad breath too. So, make sure they wash and clean the mouth properly.
- Appreciate the food they have taken
Appreciate about the taste of the food and it is not expected to pass any comments. If they don’t like the taste of any foods, don’t pass any comments but keep it aside. If they need any assistance of their parent, ask them gently about it.
Wrapping up the article
All these are not possible to be taught them in one day. Know about these and start habituating these habits as they turn 3 years. Let them sit at one place and have their food. Give them some finger foods to eat either with spoon or with hands. Make a habit of washing hands and face every time before and after meal. Let them choose their own comfort food but in little amount at first. Gradually you will see that these things turn into habit. You don’t need to tell them or instruct them about these good habits when eating them at other’s place.
